Video playing. Shot of a pencil, white background.
Laser shaves down the pencil, indicating thinner iPad Air.
Just as the leaks have said
Cook: This is the new iPad Air 2. It's unbelieveably gorgeous and look at how thin it is. Can you even see it?
From back here, looks the same as last year's but marginally thinner, according to the specs.
Phil Schiller, Apple's head of marketing, now takes the stage
He joined Apple in 1997 when Jobs returned to lead the company. That makes him the longest serving member of Apple’s executive team.
Schiller: I'm so excited to tell you about the incrdible iPad 2. 6.1 mm thinners. 18% thinner than the first iPad Air, which was 20% thinner than the iPad before it. It makes it the world's thinnest tablet
World's thinnest tablet, they say. Interestingly, I just got a pitch from another company promising a "world's thinnest tablet" later this month.
Schiller: Shows image of first iPad next to iPad Air 2. Can stack two of the iPad Air 2, and it's still thinner than the first iPad.
Do we have a millimeter measurement on the iPad Air 2 yet?
Schiller: Telling us how he made it thinner. Going through the display. There's usually an air gap in the screen, but Apple got rid of that. That reduced internal reflection.
Schiller: In addition, we've now created an antireflective coating for this multitouch surface. Reduces refelctions by 56%. This has never been done before.
Frankly, every laptop, monitor, tablet, etc should have an anti-reflective coating or anti-glare screen.
Schiller: This will be the best tablet display you've ever seen and the thinnest tablet
Schiller: Whole new generation chip. A8X. The iPhone 6/6 Plus use the A8. But this is a new version created specifically for iPad Air 2. Second-gen 64 bit architecture. 3 billion transistors. 40% faster CPU. 2.5X faster GPU.
64 bit allows you to do more intensive tasks, such as more high tech games.
180X faster graphics performance than in the first iPad
Schiller: After that, the work the software team is doing .. now able to deliver console level graphics in the palm of your hand. Metal
Schiller: All this power in such a thin package, the team has worked to ensure you have that great, all-day battery life.
Speed claims for tablets is one of the reasons we're so passionate about
benchmarking not just computers, but also tablets and phones.
Schiller: new M8 motion coprocessor. This tracks motion, calibrates sensors, barometer.
That also showed up in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
Schiller: now talking up the camera
Schiller: The iPad is the best viewfinder for composing your photos
Feels like a lot of iPhone 6 features making their way into the iPad Air 2. Although the camera lens looks flush on this one...
For the first iPad Air: The iSight camera on the back of the device took 5 megapixel photos, included autofocus and face detection features, and recorded at full 1080p HD. The iPad Air also had 3X video zoom.
Also on the first iPad Air - The FaceTime HD camera took 1.2 megapixel photos and recorded 720p HD video.
